ROCKVILLE, MD -- As the country begins to slowly re-open during the coronavirus pandemic, a leading rental car company says vanpooling may be the safest alternative to public transportation for commuters.

"From an exposure perspective, riding with the same commuters day after day (a “van family”) provides commuters a level of control, assurance and accountability to one another. Vanpool coordinators and participants work together to maintain vehicle cleanliness," Sean Ryan, Business Rental Sales Director of Enterprise Holdings for the Washington D.C area told 104.7 WONK FM's Jen Richer. "In addition, with limited capacity, vanpools inherently minimize exposure to others when compared to larger and more populated commuting options."

According to 2018 U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics data, commuter vanpools are the safest mode of public transportation when compared to motor bus, light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail and demand response services.
