Shea Serrano Wrote The Book On ‘Scrubs’ – Literally

On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison have author Shea Serrano on as a guest to talk about the 22nd episode of season one of Scrubs, “My Occurrence,” when Brendan Fraser’s character Ben Sullivan is introduced. Shea is an exciting guest because he wrote the book on Scrubs, literally, independently publishing a series of essays called Where Do You Think We Are? analyzing just what is so great about the show. He’s also the bestselling author of The Rap Yearbook and Basketball (and Other Things), so Zach is a little worried that Shea will steal Donald away from him. They talk about hip hop and what incredible salesmen street rappers selling CDs are, basketball (much to Zach’s chagrin), and how much Ben’s character reveals about Dr. Cox.

Shea wanted to be on this episode specifically because he feels that it shows “the most amount of tricks that Scrubs could pull off that most shows couldn’t,” pointing to the gag where the Janitor is in every one of Ben Sullivan’s pictures, the moment when Dr. Elliott makes herself cry talking about her father’s expectations, the fact that most of the episode was a dream sequence and it was foreshadowing events that wouldn’t occur for another two seasons, and other examples. He also loves how much Ben Sullivan reveals about Dr. Cox. Brendan Fraser played Ben “very goofy and silly, a lot like J.D.” and Shea points out that J.D. probably reminds Dr. Cox of Ben, and “this is why he has such a fondness for J.D.”

They answer listener questions from Dylan and Cam about what other TV shows Shea should write about (Battlestar Galactica for Donald, Atlanta for Zach); Shea says it really happens pretty organically. He just watched way too much Scrubs and The Office, so if he wrote a book about them, “I can say I was working that whole time and not just wasting time watching TV,” he laughs. They also reveal any pet peeves Zach and Donald had about each other when they were roommates years ago (not really, but they did get a lot of “beautifully written angry letters” from their downstairs neighbor, author Amy Tan), make fun of Turk and J.D.’s pitiful cheese plate, yell at Donald for only watching the finale of Breaking Bad and none of the other episodes, gasp when Donald reveals that he was at the party where the Notorious B.I.G. was shot, and so much more; hear the whole hilarious conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends
