White House COVID Team: Optimism & Warnings

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky

(Washington, DC) -- White House COVID adviser Andy Slavitt says better days are on the horizon in the fight against the pandemic. During a virtual briefing, Slavitt repeated a warning that this is not the time for Americans to let their guards down. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said the risk of potentially deadly infection is still looming, even as more people get vaccinated. She expressed concerns about some spikes in youth sports and daycare centers. Dr. Walensky argued that cases of the virus are still "way too high to be thinking that we've won this race."

Walensky noted that the CDC is working closely with state officials in Michigan to curb a surge in coronavirus cases there. Meantime, Slavitt announced an expansion of vaccination sites at community health centers across the U.S.
