WASHINGTON, DC -- Airport dogs might be sniffing out for more than just drugs and weapons in the future. New research suggests that dogs may be able to detect the bodily changes associated with COVID-19.
In the United Kingdom, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is working with trained airport dogs to see if they can detect anyone who might be infected with COVID-19.
According to researchers, respiratory diseases can put out a distinct body odor and they believe the skilled canines might be able to detect the scent. The institution has also worked with certain dogs to sniff out other illnesses like cancer and malaria.
Ingrid Newkirk, President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), says that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to canine intelligence. She talks about their incredible capabilities with 104.7 WONK FM's Jen Richer.
