BREAKING: Democrats Introduce Article Of Impeachment Against Trump

President Donald Trump

(Washington, DC) -- House Democrats are introducing an article of impeachment against President Trump. Multiple sources say the four-page impeachment article charges Trump with "inciting violence against the government of the United States" after he encouraged his supporters to go to the Capitol as the counting of electoral votes was underway. There is reportedly a reference to the 14th Amendment in the impeachment article, saying the Constitution prohibits anyone who "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against the United States from holding future office. The article cites a specific quote form Trump's speech last week, when he said "If you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore." Thousands of protesters descended on the U.S. Capitol and stormed the building, leading to the deaths of five people.

The article of impeachment was written by Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin and is supported by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. House Dems are putting Trump's impeachment on a fast-track and it could happen by midweek. The President's term expires next week. Trump could be the first President in U.S. history to be impeached twice.

The Democratic-led House impeached the President over the Ukraine scandal in late 2019. He was subsequently acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate. It is highly unlikely that the Senate could convene and conduct another impeachment trial before President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on January 20th. A Senate trial could occur sometime after Trump leaves office.
