Susan Cantrell, CEO, AMCP

Susan Cantrell became Chief Executive Officer of AMCP in February 2016. Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., AMCP is a national professional association of pharmacists and other health care practitioners who develop and provide a diversified range of clinical, educational, business and medication management services and strategies on behalf of the 270 million Americans covered by a managed care pharmacy benefit. AMCP’s more than 8,000 members serve society by the application of sound medication management principles and strategies to improve health care for all.

Previously in her career, Susan was Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Americas for the Drug Information Association (DIA), an 18,000-member global society of professionals involved in the development and life-cycle management of pharmaceuticals and other medical products. In this role, she was responsible for the development and implementation of DIA’s strategy in North, Central, and South America, including collaboration with regulatory agencies and other key organizations in the region.

Before joining DIA, Susan was Vice President of Resources Development at the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists (ASHP), where she worked for 19 years in a series of progressively responsible positions. While at ASHP, she helped launch ASHP Advantage and build ASHP’s online learning enterprise, providing innovative continuing education offerings for pharmacists, physicians, and other members of the health care team. Under her leadership, ASHP became the only pharmacy association accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians.

Susan is a graduate of the University of Mississippi College of Pharmacy and she completed an ASHP-accredited hospital pharmacy residency program at University of Mississippi Medical Center. She received her Certificate in Public Health from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Public Health. A registered pharmacist and former hospital and home care pharmacy administrator, she has extensive experience in pharmacy leadership, medical education, health policy and regulation, and nonprofit association management. She is certified by the American Society of Association Executives as a Certified Association Executive (CAE). She is an active member and has served in a number of volunteer leadership positions in the American Society of Association Executives, the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists, and the International Pharmaceutical Federation.
